Faculty specializations include the anthropology of the environment and conservation, identity, semiotics, Women’s studies, gender and sexuality, popular culture, kinship, economic anthropology, African American Studies, the archaeology of Mesoamerica, South America, the South Caucasus, the Nile Valley and Central Asia, archaeometry, bioarchaeology, popular culture, kinship, economic anthropology, African American studies, archaeometallurgy, the archaeology of complex societies, ancient mining communities and landscapes of power, medical anthropology, human health and aging, women's health, reproductive ecology, nutrition, human evolution, conservation and primate and hominin diet and ecology, and cultural and applied anthropology in several regions of the world. The courses taken during the first two years develop a four-field foundation for subsequent specialized research. Our program emphasizes personalized intensive instruction and interaction with graduate student peers.

The $75 (USD) application fee for international applicants is non-refundable and can be paid online via credit card. The statement of purpose should be 300-500 words concerning your purpose for undertaking or continuing graduate study, your reasons for wanting to study anthropology at Purdue, and your research interests, professional plans, and career goals. You also may explain any special circumstances applicable to your background and elaborate on your scholarly publications, awards, achievements, abilities, and/or professional history. The statement should also identify the area(s) of concentration or specialization that attract you to the anthropology program at Purdue and any individual faculty with whom you hope to work. Three (3) letters of recommendation are required for degree-seeking applicants. The letters should be from persons who can assess your academic potential such as a college or university professor. Please do not include letters from employers, academic counselors, or individuals in the community. Two copies of official transcripts for all previous undergraduate and graduate work are required. A minimum 3.0 ("B") undergraduate cumulative GPA is required for admission. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam is required for international non-native speakers of English.Applicants must score 550 or higher on the paper-based test,213 or higher on the computer-based test,or 77 or higher on the Internet-based test in order to be considered for admission.In addition, applicants who take the TOEFL iBT must achieve the following minimum test scores: reading, 19: listening, 14; speaking, 18; and writing, 18. As an alternative to the TOEFL, applicants may submit International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores of 6.

Introduction to the ideas and practices of archaeology that are used in the study of human prehistory, from the earliest stone tools to the development of agriculture and states. Emphasis is placed on the objectives and methods of contemporary archaeology. ANTH 20300 - Biological Bases Of Human Social Behavior: Credit Hours: 3.00. This course is an introduction to human social behavior from the perspective of biological anthropology, with special emphasis on human evolution and non-human primates. Topics include aggression, communication, learning, maturation, sexuality, and the evolution of social systems. ANTH 20400 – Introduction to Biological Anthropology and Human Evolution: Credit Hours: 3.00. This course surveys biological anthropology through a review of evolutionary theory and genetics, the fossil evidence for current theories in human evolution with insight from modern non-human primates, and the influence of environmental stressors on modern human biological variation. ANTH 20500 - Human Cultural Diversity: Credit Hours: 3.00. Using concepts and models of cultural anthropology, this course will survey the principal cultural types of the world and their distribution, and will undertake a detailed analysis of society’s representative of each type.
