But the emphasis is different in each program. Below, we explain the shared and differentiating elements of the two programs. Specific degree requirements are listed separately. Dartmouth promotes a healthy skepticism of the “common wisdom” about health care and encourages students to accept findings and apply evidence only after a critical evaluation of its strengths and weaknesses. Graduates of both the MPH and MS programs work in clinical practice, administration, research, and health policy, where they bring fresh understanding of the complexities of American health care along with the innovation and dedication to achieve real reform. Typical goal of graduates Improve systems Manage change in the U.S. health care system by serving as formal and informal leaders who skillfully navigate an organizational environment to improve health, health care, and the value of health services. Stimulate improvement Inform change in the U.S. health care system by conducting research in health and health care to create new knowledge, pushing science forward. Distinguishing focus of each program Develops a systems approach to health care, including application of concepts in real world settings. Develops skills for the design, conduct, evaluation, and presentation of peer reviewed clinical and health services research.
