Under the guidance of faculty associated with the department, a student may plan a course of study in a wide variety of areas. The educational experience can be broadly or narrowly directed and is limited only by the range of teaching and research activity currently conducted by the university. The goal of graduate study in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at both the M.S. and Ph.D. levels is to educate students more deeply and broadly than is possible at the B.S. level in the discipline of Biomedical Engineering. The students can then apply this knowledge toward a professional career in engineering design and development, or may pursue a career in academic education. Each student's course of study is based on his/her background, career objectives, and sound academic practice. The course of study is normally in an area in which the departmental faculty has teaching and research expertise. These areas include musculoskeletal and cardiovascular biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomedical imaging, computational biology and bioinformatics, and cellular systems modeling. An individual program for each student may be developed from courses offered by our department and other departments in the College of Engineering, especially Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, or basic science departments in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Medicine. Students desiring a more general program may combine disciplines, while those desiring some specialization in any particular field may accommodate these preferences through the combination of departmental courses and appropriate electives from other departments of

The university's institution code for the TOEFL is 6681. Admission to the Graduate College, which confers the majority of degree programs at Iowa, requires: a score of 550 or higher on the paper-based (PBT) version of the test, or a score of 81 or higher on the Internet-based version of the test (iBT). Newly admitted graduate students who present TOEFL scores below 600 on the PBT or below 100 on the IBT will be required to complete an English Proficiency Evaluation on campus before their first registration for classes. There is no conditional admission for graduate students whose TOEFL scores are below 550 on the PBT or below 81 on the IBT. Students may be required to complete English as a Second Language course work (typically within the first year of study) if specified as a result of the English Proficiency Evaluation. Minimum IELTS Score Requirements for Graduate College Admission As an alternative to taking the TOEFL, students may take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Admission to the Graduate College requires a total IELTS score of 7.0, with no subscore less than 6.0.
