The department believes that graduate students should acquire a general knowledge of the theory and methods of the four traditional sub-disciplines. Students work with their major advisor and advisory committee to determine the best way to acquire this holistic perspective of the field. In addition, the Anthropology Department offers graduate work in six broad areas of concentration. Our area strengths include Africa, the Caribbean, Latin American, Native North America, and North American minority populations; our faculty has also worked in the Middle East, Europe, South and Southeast Asia, and Oceania. We also offer extensive expertise in many research methods in ethnology and archaeology.

Some programs require specific GRE Subject Tests. Business programs require the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). *Please check with your intended program to confirm which test scores are required, if any. ENGLISH PROFICIENCY If you are not a native speaker of English, you must submit evidence of your proficiency in the English language. You may use the (no more than two years old) results from either one of two standardized tests to satisfy this requirement. If you submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you need a minimum overall score of 550 for the paper-based test, or 79 for the Internet-based test. If you submit results from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), you need an average overall band score of at least 6.5. Only the scores from the Academic Module, not the General Training Module, are applicable. If you submit results from the Person Test of English (PTE) we require and overall score of 53. ANTH 1006 Introduction to Anthropology This course is concerned with the biological and cultural development of humans from their origin to the present. A brief survey of human evolution is followed by a comparative study of behavior and beliefs of our own and other societies.
