The M.S. program is completely inappropriate for students intending to pursue academic careers in research and teaching. Such students should pursue a Ph.D. for which this M.S. program provides no meaningful preparation. The M.S. program offers coursework encompassing almost all of the subject matter for the first five professional examinations of the Society of Actuaries and Casualty Actuarial Society allowing students flexibility to focus on the particular material for which they are ready. These courses provide rigorous academic coverage of the material and are not specifically aimed at exam-prep, which is the student’s own responsibility. The program offers elective coursework meeting all of the Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) requirements of the two professional societies. In addition, advanced coursework in Statistics, Finance, Investing, Accounting and Economics is available. Students typically complete the degree in 3 or 4 semesters of full-time study and a few do it in two semesters. Rarely, a student completes the program on a part-time basis, which takes longer.

Some programs require specific GRE Subject Tests. Business programs require the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). *Please check with your intended program to confirm which test scores are required, if any. ENGLISH PROFICIENCY If you are not a native speaker of English, you must submit evidence of your proficiency in the English language. You may use the (no more than two years old) results from either one of two standardized tests to satisfy this requirement. If you submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you need a minimum overall score of 550 for the paper-based test, or 79 for the Internet-based test. If you submit results from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), you need an average overall band score of at least 6.5. Only the scores from the Academic Module, not the General Training Module, are applicable. If you submit results from the Person Test of English (PTE) we require and overall score of 53.
