The degree focuses on the design and implementation of socio-technical systems. The ESD SM can be a terminal degree that prepares the student for productive practice, or it can be obtained during the ESD PhD program. The ESD SM allows ESD faculty and students to work together on issues of mutual interest different from those covered by the other masters' programs that are part of ESD (i.e., the Technology and Policy, Supply Chain Management, and System Design and Management programs described elsewhere in this chapter). It can also serve as the engineering SM for students in the Leaders for Global Operations program.
