The course is open to both physicists and students from mathematics, chemistry or engineering disciplines provided they have a sufficiently strong physics background. A stream is available within this course in shock physics: MSc in Physics with Shock Physics. This stream focuses on the understanding of what happens to matter under extreme conditions. A second stream is available in nanophotonics: MSc in Physics with Nanophotonics. This stream considers the interaction of photons with matter at the smallest of scales. The Department has also introduced a new, two-year MSc in Physics with Extended Research. The MSc in Physics with Extended Research shares the same course as the 12-month programme, except that the project is undertaken over nine months in the second academic year.
