All research programmes include a programme of induction, work-in-progress seminars and a graduate conference. Candidates research and write a 80,000 word thesis. The thesis will constitute a substantial original contribution to knowledge which is, in principle, worthy of peer-reviewed publication. Areas for PhD supervision include: Epigraphy; Numismatics; Visual and Material Culture; Art; Ancient Medicine; Ancient Athletics; Greek Social and Cultural History; Sexuality and Gender; Ancient Rhetoric; Augustus and the Early Principate; Greek Religion and Greek Sanctuaries; Greek theatre; Greek Literature, especially lyric poetry; Greek Political History; Latin Literature; Reception of Greek Thought in Arabic Culture; Platonism in the Renaissance; Roman cultural history; Roman Economy; Roman Syria; Sicily and North Africa; The Western Mediterranean.
