The development of design ability features strongly, both for the structural and environmental engineering design of buildings, and for other civil engineering projects. Emphasis is placed on engineering knowledge and understanding, and educating the full range of skills that are needed to use that understanding for the benefit of society. Students develop their creative design and problem-solving skills in substantial design projects, mostly working in teams together with students of Architecture. Teaching and learning Teaching in the Department is mainly through lectures, tutorials, laboratories and fieldwork, with substantial design projects carried out in purpose-built studios. There is an optional placement year offering students an opportunity to combine academic study with an Industrial Placement. There are many opportunities to acquire work place skills prior to graduation. The course uses joint projects, where teams of architectural and engineering students work together to produce highly integrated, inventive and imaginative design solutions.
