You develop evidence-based approaches to advanced clinical skills. You also engage with a core set of modules to develop critical academic skills at master’s level. These culminate in a dissertation of your design. The course is inter-disciplinary in approach and provides a choice of modules to study in your own area of practice, while developing core transferable skills relevant to advanced clinical practice. The course develops key transferable skills relevant to advanced clinical practice. The themes include the development of advanced clinical decision-making skills, the ability to develop research-informed practice, the development of autonomous advanced practice and leadership skills. Programme development has been informed by the Skills for Health Team's competency framework for the role of advanced practitioner (2009), Primary Care now more than ever (WHO 2008) and Community Based Rehabilitation guidelines (WHO 2010). This course has been developed in response to local, national and international agendas for the increased role of primary care and the development of practitioners with special interests. Practitioners are increasingly encouraged to develop advanced clinical skills and enhance their abilities as autonomous practitioners, for example physiotherapists, occupational therapists, diagnostic radiographers, podiatrists, dieticians and nurses. This course is responsive to the NHS and World Health Organisation modernisation agenda which calls for new ways of working and role redesign.
