TOEFL All applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency. We will only accept TOEFL tests administered by the Education Testing Service (ETS) and sent to us directly by the TOEFL office. For Fall 2017 applicants, tests taken before June 1, 2014 will not be accepted even if your score was reported to Berkeley. Official scores are required. The institution code for Berkeley is 4833. You can enter any departmental code. As long as you enter the correct institutional code for Berkeley (4833) your scores will be matched with your submitted application. IELTS In lieu of the TOEFL exam, you can submit scores from the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP:IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. Tests taken before June 1, 2014 will not be accepted. Your most recent overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale. You are responsible for providing us with an official Test Report Form (TRF) of your IELTS. Remember to order the TRF when you register to take the test. More information about these requirements, can be found on the Graduate Division website. GRE Our department requires the GRE General exam; no exceptions. GRE scores older than five years are not accepted. (For Fall 2017 admission the oldest acceptable exam date is October 2011). We do not require any subject tests. We encourage you to take the GRE as soon as possible to ensure that your scores arrive by the deadline. Domestic candidates from families with extremely low incomes may qualify for a waiver of GRE test fees. Consult your undergraduate financial aid office to determine whether your institution participates in the GRE Fee Waiver Program and whether you qualify. Fee waivers are not available directly from the Educational Testing Service or from the UC Berkeley Graduate Division Admissions office.

Fee You must submit an application fee when you apply. The application fee is not re­fundable. If you are a U.S. citizen or current permanent resident, the application fee is $105; for all others, the fee is $125. RL The department requires three (3) letters of recommendation to be submitted online. We recommend these letters to be from persons who have supervised your research or academic work and who can evaluate your intellectual ability, creativity, leadership and potential. Letters from instructors with little knowledge of your abilities are not recommended.The submission of more than three letters is discouraged. Letters must be submitted electronically, and we encourage you to make your recommenders aware of this at an early stage.Reviews of applications begin once they are complete. You are thus encouraged to submit your application as early as possible, and to make every effort to assure that your letters of recommendation are submitted as early as possible, on or before the December 7th, 2015 application deadline. Keep in mind that we will not consider your application if it is not complete. Transcript You will need to upload unofficial transcripts with the online application for the initial review.
