Degree programs are offered in two areas of concentration: Systems and Mechanics: includes theories of elasticity, plasticity, stability, wave propagation, material behavior, linear and nonlinear vibrations, automatic control, fracture mechanics, micro- and nanomechanics, damage mechanics, computational geometry, computer-aided design/manufacturing, kinematics and dynamics of mechanisms, robotics, optimal design, digital signal processing, machining and metal removal, and composite material design and processing. Thermal and Fluid Sciences: includes classical and statistical theories of thermodynamics and studies of conduction, convection, radiation, inviscid and viscous flows, compressible and heated flows, combustion, laminar, turbulent, and two-phase flows. Engineering applications including the design and analysis of many systems, processes and devices, such as high-speed combustion systems, thermal manufacturing of advanced materials, energy systems including emerging areas such as fuel cells, and enhanced heat transfer devices such as heat pipes. In addition, the department offers the Master of Engineering program which is taught on-site to employees of Pratt and Whitney and the United Technologies Corporation only. Your transcript(s) must meet the following criteria: A cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 for your entire undergraduate career or A grade-point average of at least 3.0 for your last two undergraduate years or Exceptional work in your entire final undergraduate career (3.5 or better) or Graduate work with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 or better GRADUATE TEST SCORES Many programs require submission of the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Some programs require specific GRE Subject Tests. Business programs require the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). *Please check with your intended program to confirm which test scores are required, if any. ENGLISH PROFICIENCY If you are not a native speaker of English, you must submit evidence of your proficiency in the English language. You may use the (no more than two years old) results from either one of two standardized tests to satisfy this requirement. If you submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you need a minimum overall score of 550 for the paper-based test, or 79 for the Internet-based test. If you submit results from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), you need an average overall band score of at least 6.5. Only the scores from the Academic Module, not the General Training Module, are applicable. If you submit results from the Person Test of English (PTE) we require and overall score of 53.
